words from the prez

Bruce Coleman

July 24

Thanks Joel for the program and Waneta for the dessert at last week’s meeting.  Please look at the website or your calendar for program dates.  Judy Cox has the program Monday and Marva has desert.  For August 2nd Matt has the program and Del has dessert. On August 9th Roger Miller has both ?!! Well we know he pull something out of a hat.

Last week’s guests were visiting Rotarian Art Collins, Ken Stacey and Chris Steineger.  Chris is a state senator for part of Wyandotte county and is running for secretary of state.  Since this is political season we may have other candidates for office visit our club.  They are certainly welcome and I will introduce them as a candidate for office but unless you think I am wrong I should not give them a floor to talk about their campaign.  Chris did not ask for time and did offer to do a program in the future as a legislative update if anyone needs a program.

Membership committee is proposing that each member give a Rotary minute on the day they have a program.  This can be a short comment of why you became a Rotarian or something that has impressed you about Rotary or something about your vocation or anything you are involved in.  This is one way our members can learn more about you.  I think it is a good idea – let’s give it a try.

See you Monday!

Last week was the best district governor talk I have seen.  He challenged us to think big and make Rotary happen.  I have started wearing my Rotary pin daily – sure hope I do not lose it – I have misplaced a couple already.  It looks like we have desserts lined up for the meetings through October – thanks for your volunteering.  Remember to look at the calendar on the website.

If anyone is interested in attending the District Foundation/Membership/ Leadership Seminar on August 7, please let me know.  If anyone attended last year you might tell us what to expect.

Next month should be very busy with Tiblow Days – The invitations for the race should go in the mail late this week or early next.  Thanks

Happy Father's Day to all of you dad's and hope you are having a good day with your kids (or if you are fortunate enough to still have your own dad), or at least having  a  good visit on the phone. My dad passed away 14 years ago, was a great man who taught me much about life and is greatly missed each day.

wear cool comfy clothes, enjoy some good drink, food, friendship and changing of the guard!!!!!

Last week we  had great attendance and for those of you not there, we missed you. Dwain was in charge of the program, however he was unable to attend, so Bruce, our soon to be new prez, gave us our comm. assignments and we broke into our groups to start planning for a new year. Through observation, it seemed everyone was off to a good start. (Now, whether they were talking about the subject at hand-------I have no idea!!!) In any case it was exciting and I know we are going to have another great year.  Thanks to Bruce for delicious cupcakes too. We also celebrated birthdays for Marva and Judy C.

June 7- Thank you Roger for a very interesting program about Civil War facts. When you have "all of your facts", you can present another program. Darrell provided delicious cookie sheet brownies--one of my favorites!!!!

June 28 we will be back at Twister's and Darrell is in charge of the program. I will bring dessert (since no one is signed up. Ha )

See you all tomorrow evening at WY COUNTY PARK, 6 pm

May 30, 2010

For those of you who still work, hope you are enjoying your long week-end, as for the rest of us we don't really notice the difference but hope everyone is happy and safe.

THERE WILL BE NO MEETING TOMORROW, MAY 31st, 2010. I'LL SEE YOU JUNE 7th at TWISTER'S.

Another good meeting last week and was well attended. Sol gave the program and it was about Estate planning, trusts, wills, living wills, power of attorney, who should have what, and the list continues. He also outlined important issues  to take into consideration and who could/would help one "put their affairs in order." :) Warren had delicious chocolate cookies for us to enjoy and we certainly did!!!

Bruce told each of us what our comm. assignments are for next year. Don't panic if you've forgotten---I'm certain he will send out a list. He is so EXCITED to take over as president he's busy planning each day. BTW, the Installation of Officers has been changed from June 28th, to June 21st, at the WY CO PARK. You'll still have to put up with me on the 28th as our new president WILL BE GONE. That guy will do anything to get out of work.

Trust you are still considering giving $100 (or more if you want of course) to the Foundation before June 28th if you haven't already done so. It would thrill me no end and just add to the list of accomplishments we have achieved this year, thanks to all of you. (I know Al, I'll be able to hear you grumble when you read this!!!)

June 7th Roger will be in charge of the program and Darrell will provide dessert.

Enjoy you day off and I'll see you a week from this Monday.

Judy

May 24, 2010

A week-end of sunshine is better than any medicine one can take!!! (Sorry Roger) I hope all of you have enjoyed it as much as I have.

A our meeting last week we had two guests---Robert Thompson from the Gardner Rotary. He is the 5710 Polio Chair person. He talked with us briefly about Rotary Day at the KC Royals, Strike Out Polio which benefits our campaign to End Polio Now. I will have information and a sign up sheet tomorrow for those who might be interested in attending. The event is Sunday, June 6th. We also had as our guest Bastian, a student exchange  from Spain who has been attending high school in the Shawnee Mission district. He is to return home in July, but says he is not ready to go!!!

Judy Cox had Del do a program on the Rotary Foundation, why the Foundation is important, where the money goes, how to give to the Foundation and the area(s) where you would like your money to be placed. My dream to end out my year as your president would be that EACH MEMBER contribute at least $100 to the Foundation. So, if you have not already done this, would you please give it serious consideration? Judy C had double duty and provided delicious brownies for us to enjoy.

Sol will be in charge of the program tomorrow and Warren will provide dessert. Trust all of you are planning to attend and remember Al, the mtg ends at 1:00!!!!!

See you tomorrow at Twister's

Judy

Do you think it will rain???? If I were a duck I'd be having a good time. It's been good for my flowers, but even they would now like a little warm sunshine!!! We'll see what tomorrow brings. (Al, I think you'll be able to stay until 1:00 tomorrow---too wet to mow!)

Thank you Marva for a very interesting program last week, and thank you for letting me be the one to introduce you--what fun that was!!!!For those of you not present, Marva told us about the first lady that was accepted into a Rotary Club and how that tradition has continued to exist (you lucky men!!!) Marva and Waneta were the first women to join the Bonner Springs Club, although one man wasn't so sure about it at first, he "smarted up" and all is well!! Marva also talked about her achievements when serving as  Rotary President etc. I still can't believe she had ALL of those papers, pictures and awards. Wow, what a lady. Nicole served us very delicious fresh fruit. Del was so proud of himself that he learned to eat blueberries and blackberries with a knife. Such talent.

Don't forget,  you need to give Bruce your first and second committee preference tomorrow.  Other wise, you know what happens---he gets to choose for you. (However, I told him my two choices and he laughed and said, "NO" so good luck)

Judy C has the program which will be Del talking about the Foundation. If you haven't given to the Foundation this year, I do hope you will consider doing so. You'll hear more tomorrow about this and the importance. Judy C also has dessert. Think that's called---double duty.

Hope to see all of you tomorrow at Twister's Monday.  Dwain and Sol, we have been missing you!!!!! Hope you can be back with us soon.

Judy

May 9, 2010

Greetings to one and all-

Last week was a  busy one for Rotary. We had our regular meeting on Monday. Guests were Ian Sangster and Art Collins. Ian was also our program thanks to Dean, even though Dean didn't know he had invited him. Guess we can excuse him (again) since he has been MIA for several months. WELCOME HOME, Dean.  Ian gave a very interesting program on the archeological dig that he and his daughter Jamie went on with a group from  UMKC. I hope he will return one day to tell us more facts about the Civil War. Thank you Lois for dessert.

Mike Miller made the announcement that Darrell was to receive a Bronze Medal of Honor on Sat. May 8th. Darrell served in the Army under General George Patton. Congratulations, Darrell!!!!  You can read more about this in the Chieftain. It was also nice to have Darrell return to Rotary and seems to be doing better.

We received thank you notes from our three scholarship recipients, Emily Herre, Elizabeth Grinter & Kayla Zimmerly. We wish them well.

Thursday night was our Club Assembly where we "brainstormed" ideas on how we see and want our club to be in the next one - three years. We had a very good meeting and discussion and I think the next year is going to be exciting if we all continue to work together as we did this past year. We ate LOTS of pizza, cookies and enjoyed different beverages!!! Bruce, thank you for a great job of leading the assembly and thanks to Del, Wes, Joel, Nicole, Matt, Darrell, Mike, Marva, Jim, Judy C, Larry, Roger, Charles, Lois & Waneta for your attendance and participation. (I hope I didn't leave anyone out, please let me know if I did) The Premier Club continues to move forward. Thanks to all of you.

Monday Marva will have the program and Nicole will have dessert for us. (Glad she didn't have jury duty this week)

It's great to be a Rotarian in Bonner Springs & I'll see you Monday at Twister's.

Judy

May 3, 2010

Greetings this Monday morning and a very nice one it is!!! I had a busy but fun week-end and trust that all of you enjoyed a good one also.

We didn't have a guest program last week, but Bruce talked with us about the upcoming Club Assembly and how we can prepare ahead of time by thinking of questions, ideas, improvements etc that can make us continue to be the "Premier Club" and an even stronger, more visible club. Our assembly will be held this Thursday, May 6th, 6:00 -8:00 p.m. at the Super 8 Hotel meeting room. Food and beverage will be provided. I will take care of the dessert. PLEASE plan to be there as it is important that we all take ownership in the future of the Bonner Springs Rotary. Joel, thank you for the delicious strawberry-rhubarb pie. Wish I had a hunk of it right now!!!

Dean has the program today (although I don't know that he is back in town) but he does have a program, Ian Sangster and his daughter from Lake of the Forest. Lois has dessert. Are you home, Lois? Darrell will be with us at noon so he will give us an update!!! We're thankful he can join us.

I am attaching a document from Bruce with information we discussed in last year's assembly. You might want to bring a copy of that with you on Thurs evening along with other ideas!!! I really am looking forward to our gathering and hearing what everyone has to offer!!! Change is not always comfortable at first, but some change is a necessity if we are to grow!!!!

See you soon at Twister's

Judy

This is a letter from Bruce Coleman which Judy attached to her e-mail.

                                    Bonner Springs Rotary Club

                                                            P. O. Box 456

                                      Bonner Springs, KS 66012

Our club assembly is Thursday May 6 from 6:00PM to 8:00PM at the Super 8.  This is a very important meeting as we look at ways to improve our club and step forward in the coming year.   The Rotary International theme for 2010-2011 is “Building Communities; Bridging Continents”.   We will be building on what we accomplished last year.  Last year’s assembly started us off on an outstanding year.  The following information will help you prepare for the meeting.  It includes some of the information from last year’s assembly.  Your thoughts, opinions are vitally important in molding our Rotary future.

Here is a brief outline of what we discussed last year.

What would you like our club to be like in three years?

·        Younger and more active

·        Greater visibility in the community

·        MA little more structured organization

·        Increased emphasis on international programs

·        Better weekly programs

·        Increased Rotary information for all

What are the biggest challenges our club faces in the next three years?

·        Membership

What keeps us from having more members?

·        Not asking

·        Not following up

·        Not welcoming

·        Lack of quality programs

What do we need to make our Rotary club better?

·        Break out of comfort zone

·        Be more professional

·        Challenge ourselves to improve

·        Website

·        Better networking

To make it better we will operate with five committees:

·        Membership

·        Administration

·        Service projects

·        Public Relations

·        Foundation

For our meeting on Thursday we will discuss how we did on all of these, where we need to improve and how our committees structure worked.

Date: Monday, April 26, 2010, 10:06 AM

Greetings to all and hope your week-end has gone well. I was suppose to get some yard work done, but the rain helped me out there. Ha!

Our Scholarship dinner was a total success!! Thank you Marva for stepping in for Charles and taking care of all details etc. Thank you Wes & Marva for helping set up on Mon morning and for Bruce bringing his "silver." (I do hope none of it was taken!!!)  I also say thanks for the ones who helped clean up afterwards. I really think Brenna Hoch did most of the work. Ha As I stated that evening, it is always a  privilege to honor these students and hear the goals they have set as they begin that next big step on their journey. I thought they all seemed very appreciative and truly happy to be there. We certainly wish the best for all. I will be presenting them again this Wed for the HS Scholarship night. Thanks to all of our members who were there and making them feel welcomed. Our food was delicious also!!

Jim Bishop is to have the program today and Joel will supply the dessert. Hmm, wonder what he has cooked up for us. :-) I talked with Genevieve yesterday and Darrell is at the VA Hospital in Lansing. Please keep both of them in your thoughts and prayers. I will have a card at the check in table for you to sign.

We will be having our Club Assembly soon so we can do more brainstorming on what has gone well this year, what needs to be tweaked, new ideas to try etc. So, be thinking & jotting down things you want to be covered in this mtg. It will NOT be on a regular meeting day, but an evening like we did in the fall.

See you Monday at Twister's

Judy

4-5-10

Just a quick and HUGE THANK YOU to my Rotary friends that stood out in the thunder, lightening, hail and rain this morning to sell newspapers. You are greatly  appreciated!!!!! Dean, how do you manage to make this happen EVERY OPENING DAY & it makes no difference if you are far or near. I have certainly underestimated your power!!!

See you next MONDAY, APRIL 12TH at Twister's. Larry Berg will have the program and Roger/Sheila will have dessert. Have a good week.

Judy

April 4, 2010

Let us all rejoice this day and shout, Alleluia, Christ is Risen!!!!! Wishing you all a wonderful Easter Day.

Please remember, tomorrow, April 5th, is Greater Kansas City Day and we will be out early selling papers, 6:30 a.m. (Ray Bush used to say his clock didn't have an am on it!!! Miss you Ray) If you don't know which corner you are to be working, email or give Jim Bishop a call.

CHANGE,PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDAR: the Scholarship date had to be changed due to the High School not getting the names to us soon enough (I am suppose to get them Mon) The Adm Comm would not have been able to get letters out, RSVP's returned or Wes get awards completed in such a short while. So, our new date is APRIL 19th, 2010 at the Super 8 Motel. I hope this will not interfere with schedules. Larry, I had you down for a program on the 19th, instead of the 12th, but maybe this will work out better for you with your guest. Let me know.

Last week we had great attendance and a wonderful guest/program. Rebecca Welsh, from  the HALO Foundation Helping Art Liberate Orphans, gave a great presentation on how she started this foundation, what it does for so many orphaned children all over the world. She herself was a "breath of fresh air" and a wonderful presenter. Roger probably has more details he can give us through the Rotator.  Thank you Nicole for introducing her to us. I think this is an organization that Rotary might want to consider partnering with in some way. Judy, thank you for the tasty cake.

I'll see some of you in the morning and the rest of you I will see next Monday,  April 12, for our regular Rotary Meeting at Twister's.

Judy

3-21-10

Well, my March calendar has several open dates now so guess I'll have to find something to do -:(Not only that, the first day of spring came in with  a snowstorm. Oh, the joys of living in the mid-west. Perhaps we really have seen the last one until next winter. At least it won't last too long.

Was a very fun meeting last week when we celebrated the success of "Rotary's Roger Miller Roast" Congratulations to each of you on a job well done.  For dessert, Wes brought a delicious cake with the words, "Good-Bye Polio, Thanks to Rotary." It was fun talking about the highlights of the evening. Wes also shared the wonderful news,-----we made $4, 495.00. Fantastic!!!! Our guests were, Nicole Kelly in appreciation for all she has done for Rotary this year, Charley Vogt, Kevin? (sorry) & Courtney Davis. Hope I didn't miss anyone.

We inducted two new members, Matt Eaves & Nicole Gerken. Welcome to both of you and we are so happy to have you join us. Matt's email is matteaves@kansascityymca.org, PH: (913) 728-2404  Nicole's is, nicolepericagerken@yahoo.com PH: (913) 548-8875 Please add this info to your roster. I had the honor to present Del with his 4+ Paul Harris  Fellow Pin, which means he has continued to give a $1,000 each year beyond his original Paul Harris Fellow Award.  Del  presented a Paul Harris Fellow Award to Nicole Gerken in recognition for the way her life exemplifies the humanitarian & educational objectives of The Rotary Foundation. Congratulations to both of you. I hope the rest of us will consider making a contribution to the foundation also.

Al Ramirez has the program this week and Waneta will bring the dessert!!!! Both are unknown!!

See ya Monday at Twister's

Judy

ROCK, CHALK, KU, GONNA MAKE IT ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't reported in since the Roast, but we are still up and running and doing a fine job!!! Have been having some good programs,  on Feb 22nd, "James Naismith", Mr. Basketball, was a guest of Jim Bishops, March 1st,  Tom Cooley, Unified Government Commissioner, was a guest of Bruce Coleman's, & March 8th,  Lyle Bracken, Director of Tall Oaks Christian Church Camp was a guest of Warren Hanks. Thanks to all of you for providing such interesting programs. Dessert has been provided by, Larry Berg, Jim Bishop and Al Ramirez. Yummy!!!!

I hope EVERYONE is planning on attending our meeting today. It's going to be a very exciting time!!!! We are going to be Celebrating our huge success, ROTARY'S ROGER MILLER ROAST, and it is also a THANK YOU, to each of you who made it  happen.

Another very exciting happening today---We are inducting TWO NEW MEMBERS, Matt Eaves & Nicole Gerken!!! Both are going to be a great asset for our club. Please be certain to talk with each one of them today. I am thrilled to be a part of this celebration.

There will also be two Paul Harris Fellowships given, which is also a honor.

Wes is providing dessert for us and it's going to be yummy, yummy. (No, he's not making it!!)

I have invited Nicole Kelley from the Chieftain to be a guest also in appreciation for all she has done for Rotary this year. I hope she'll be able to make it. Please let her know how much she is appreciated.

Put on your pin, be a Proud Rotarian and come CELEBRATE!!! It's going to be a good day!!!

Judy

February 20, 2010

Surprise, surprise it is snowing. How many hours has it been since the last one? Better tonight then next Sat. I have a very positive feeling that the weather is going to cooperate. Won't you all join me in that thought?

Roger was very gracious and filled in as our program, you know he always has something to pull out of his hat!!! We were tested on Presidential trivia. Bruce, did Roger tell you to bone up on your history? You knew way to many answers otherwise. Joel was in charge of dessert!!!

I was very pleased to announce that Matt Eaves is officially a member of the Bonner Springs Rotary. Welcome, Matt and we are very happy to have you with us. What office is it you want next year? Just kidding!!!

Please remember to bring your ticket money or unsold tickets to Rotary Mon. I must turn in a head count to the caterer after the meeting. Also, we will be setting up the tables at the Lake Forest Club House on Fri. We will get there at noon to set up and then the caterer and crew will arrive at 2pm to dress the tables, etc. If you are available to help that would be great. Please let me know. We will also need help after the event for some clean up. The parking attendant is furnished by the lake, and the catering  service will have their crew to bus tables, keep water/tea glasses filled etc. What a great help that is and that way all of us can sit and enjoy the wonderful entertainment.

Monday Jim will have the program and his guest will be Mr. Basketball, Henry Naismith. This would be a great time to bring a guest.  Thanks in advance Jim, for bringing him.  Larry is in charge of dessert.

Have a good Sunday and I'll see you Monday at Twister's.

Judy

2-15-10

Oh boy, starting another week with a white ground. Isn't that just so thrilling, not to mention how cold it is. Well, I'm just going to look on the positive side and be thankful for the sunshine!!!

Rick Moulin, Asst. Principal at Bonner High talked with us about different programs at the school, changes taken place, testing and expectations. He was a guest of Larry B. Other guests were Robin Neal. Updates were given on "Roger's Roast" Event plans are coming together, but the work probably won't all be done until we all join together at 6pm Feb 27th to enjoy one of the GREATEST EVENTS OF BONNER SPRINGS. I'm trusting EACH of YOU have been out this week or making phone calls to folks in or outside the community to be a part of this great time. Each one of us is a volunteer in our club and being a volunteer means to freely choose to offer or give of your service without being asked. The feeling of graditude that you receive in doing this is the best gift of all. I hope we will all continue to be a VOLUNTEER this week. The success of this event is a reflection on each of us. Be a proud Rotarian. Please purchase your tickets today or ASAP as we must turn in a head count to the caterer by next Monday, February 22.

We do not have a program today. The person I called was unable to attend today. So, if any of you have a song, dance, or whatever (well, maybe not whatever) you're on!!! Joel has dessert.

The Administration Comm is mtg right after our meeting. See you soon.

Judy

February 8, 2010

I'll make this quick since we will be meeting in an hour. The time just got away from me last week. Hope all enjoyed the Super Bowl, especially the commercials!!! Was a good game even though I wanted the Colts to win!!!!  At least we didn't get the predicted snow storm and hope that will remain true from now on out.

Last week Bruce gave an interesting program on Coleman Equipment Co from the time it began until present day. I never really think about what all has to go into a business like that and was good to hear. I've just always been amazed at how they mow around all of that equipment and make it look so great!!!!! Del furnished good pie.

Today Larry Berg has the program and Rick Moulan will be his guest. Charles has dessert.

Marva will have tickets to sell, so please purchase yours plus take extra ones to sell to the community. We'll have an update on how things are progressing.

Joel, Nicole and I visited the Village West Rotary Club on Thurs morning, and Charly Vogt will be emailing all of his members with the Roast info. Thanks, Del for getting that out. We still need volunteers to step up and help. Please see one of the comm members at the meeting. (Joel, Wes, Del, Bruce, myself)

See ya in a few. Hope our attendance is better today. We miss all of those who have not been with us.

Judy

ROCK CHALK, JAYHAWK, GO KU, ROCK CHALK, JAYHAWK, GO KU, ROCK CHALK, JAYHAWK, GO KU!!!!

2-1-10

One month of the new year  has already passed us by. In spite of the cold, snow & ice, it was a good one for Rotary. We've had good attendance, good programs, good food/desserts and best of all, fun and fellowship. Thanks to each of you for making all of this possible.

Steve Cook, Principal at Clark Middle School had a very interesting presentation and pictures from the mission trip that he and his family went on last summer to Africa. We hope to have him back at a later time "for the rest of the story." Was nice to have Jenny Kivett as our guest. She was  very sad we didn't have time to sing. Usually people feel just the opposite. I am getting a little worried about how we are singing #3. What's with that? Thank you Lois for the good chocolate dessert.

Del urged all Rotarians to purchase their Roast tickets ASAP . When we started these plans it seemed like a long time away, well, IT IS NOT. We need some volunteers to see about getting sponsors, attend other Rotary Clubs,  talk with folks to see if they have purchased tickets, and if they haven't, have some tickets handy to sell to them. After selling tickets, make certain you get that info to Marva. Need to give her the name, address if possible and ticket #.  I'm hoping Marva and Bruce will have an update for us tomorrow. I would rather you tell us (comm) what business you would like to approach for a sponsorship (we do have a list) but if not, you will be assigned to at least one. If you would rather go with someone, that's perfectly fine too. As you've heard me say so many times, EACH ONE MUST TAKE OWNERSHIP OF THIS ROAST.  There are many comments and compliments from people regarding Rotary and what a great event to host. Let's make certain they  are "wowed" off their feet when the evening draws to a close. BTW--The Dist Gov, Jim Mattes and his wife will be attending. Information is suppose to appear on the Dist website soon.

Tomorrow Bruce has the program and Del has dessert. Nice to keep it all in the family!!!!

See you tomorrow at Twister's

>
> Hope everyone is staying warm and out of the elements as much as possible. It's been quite brutal.
If it really does get to 39* the end of the week some of our friends will think they can be out playing
golf. Hmmm, wonder who that would be??
>
> Despite the cold and snow we had a great turn out for our meeting last week. Of course we missed those
of you who didn't make it. Mike Miller had the program and talked with us about what else---TAXES,
everyone's favorite word, right!!! (Nothing against you, Mike) Just explained some of the rules, new
and old, what can and can't be done etc. He also mentioned the word "refund"--I never seem to get one
of those. Thanks Mike for a good presentation.
>
> Tomorrow Charles has the program and Amanda Hallier from the Spofford House will be our guest.
Spofford House is a home for teen-age troubled youths. This will be a very interesting program and I
hope all of us will be able to attend. I had some contact with this home while working on my graduate
 degree. Waneta has dessert--woo-hoo!!!
>
> Also, you will have homework tomorrow---each of you will be given a story form so that you can write
something funny, sad, real or unreal, nice or not nice about Roger. So, wear your thinking cap and have
a pen or pencil!!!!
>
> DUES need to be paid. Check with Wes if you have any questions.
>
> Comm. chairs, sometime during the next two weeks you need to meet with your members to see what
responsibilities you will have next and then each comm. will need to report to the club. One of my goals this year was to have three new members by the end of my term. Thanks to Bruce we will soon have one. What are the rest of us doing to help achieve this goal?

1-3-10

Happy New Year to each of you and may it be one of good health, happiness and prosperity. I trust that you had a good Christmas as well and I do hope none of you wished for a white Christmas but if you did, please don't do it again. Ok? I'm so glad that I had Miksi to share it with. Was quite different from the way I had ever celebrated, but it also made me realize how thankful and blessed I should be to have a warm home, food, friends/family (at least I could talk on the phone) and good health. I also want to take this time to thank each of you for the energy you put into Rotary, to helping us be more visible within the community, for the projects completed and those that are yet to be and for all of your support you have given to me as your president. It is greatly appreciated.

Our auction was great and the check has been given to Vaughn Trent. We will also invite someone to a meeting to present the check officially!! Thanks again to the Adm. comm. for all of their hard work. It was a success.

Since last I wrote we have had programs from Darrell whose guest was Waneta and she told about her life happenings - very interesting

Joel & Nicole who are doing the marketing layouts for Roger's Roast. They presented the posters and laid out some of the expectations for all of us.

Jim had Emily Humphrey as a guest and  she gave a program about her experiences as a Rotary Exchange student. (Oh, if I were only younger.) Emily's dad was a guest also, as well as Sue Bishop. We were also glad to have Sandra Thomas and Matt visit us earlier in the month.

Good desserts came from Waneta, Joel and Bruce.

The comm. is meeting on a regular basis to finalize plans for Roger's Roast. Comm. sign up sheet will be circulating very soon. I'll have the comm. names tomorrow so you can be thinking about what/where your expertise will best fit. It truly is going to be a wonderful evening. (snow,

snow go away Feb 27th is Roger's Day) REMEMBER!!!!! WE ALL HAVE TO BE INVOLVED TO MAKE THIS A SUCCESS

I had word from Maggie that Lois' mom passed away and she was going to KY. Please keep Lois in your thoughts and prayers.

Looking forward to being with you all tomorrow at Twister's. (I hope we can make it)

In spite of the icky cold weather we had another good meeting and lively conversation!!!!! Those of you who couldn't make it, we missed you.
We checked with the person in charge of dessert  to see if he had put all of us on a diet since we didn't see anything on the table to make us ooh & ahh, waiting to taste something delicious----seems as how Wes was wondering the same thing. Yes, that's right, he had forgotten, but he did some fast talking with the waitress and she came through for him. We had scrumptious sopaipilla's with honey!!!!! We are such a class act, we didn't cause him any grief at all!!!!!!

Roger gave a great program regarding part of his collection of artifacts that he had taken to the Antique Road show for appraisal when it was in the area!!! Had some very interesting items and you could certainly tell which one he was most fond of by the way he handled it!!!! Check with him if you want to know more details. Next week Mary Redman, Dwain's wife, Mary, will be a guest as well as the program and DARRELL HAS DESSERT (Maybe putting this info in all caps will help us remember!!!) I do hope we'll have some guests present also.

As you saw in the email from Charles, our venue has changed for the auction and will be held at the Super 8 motel still on Dec. 1st. This should be a good place for us also. We'll be closer together, so make sure you work even harder to keep your bid number hidden from the Coleman brothers!!!! Jim B made a challenge to all of us to bring at least one guest to the auction, let's make it happen.

I'd best finish packing and then run the sweeper and hit the feathers. Have a big travel day tomorrow to SUNNY and WARM CA!!!! Little Miksi has already gone with her sitter and it's very lonely here. She was happy as a lark wagging out of here. Wishing you all  Thanksgiving Blessings and I'll see you at the auction. Bruce will be your leader next week and remember No meeting on Nov 29th.

Greetings on this cold Monday morning. Miksi and I even got hit by the sleet on our walk this morning. Guess we knew it would happen sometime!!!

Last week we had a full house, even had to move in a few extra chairs. It was great!!! Our guests were, Matt Eaves, Jenny Kivett, (Joel) Nancy Johnson, (Sol) John James,(Mike) & Charly Vogt (?????)Ha Most of our own members were present too, so that makes it even better. Guess we'll be hearing some of the "fish tales" today!!. Nancy Johnson, Director of the Bonner Tourism Bureau was also our program. Was interesting to hear what new things our happening with the business'---the present ones as well as the future---new billboards advertising what's happening, packets that are handed out to new folks moving in, and how to advertise your own company/business if you want. I think maybe we should get something in those packets regarding Rotary!!!!! Let me know your feelings on that. Judy C had a great pumpkin dessert for us all to enjoy. (Judy, did you send it to Sandra to be put on the website?) Roger, thanks for getting the two articles in the Chieftain regarding Rotary.

Please mark this date Feb 27th, 2010 on your new calendar as plans are underway for ROGER'S ROAST!!!!!! It will take ALL of us to make this a success, and yes, there will be much work, but----it's going to be an event we have never done before, a great way to raise money for polio, will draw people from our community plus all over the area, other states, and a wonderful reason to get all gussied up for an evening of delicious food, wine and fantastic entertainment. NO ONE WILL WANT TO MISS THIS EVENT!!!!!!!! Updates will be given each week and comm. will soon be formed.

Roger has our program today and Wes has dessert. See you REAL SOON at Twister"s.

11-08-09

Think we can bottle up this weather and use it this winter when it's so coooold!!!! We have certainly been fortunate to have such wonderful days. (Even though the leaves just keep returning as soon as you get them cleaned up)

Our meeting was well attended again last week and that is always a good feeling. Our guest was Matt Eaves(sp ?) from the YMCA and I hope most of your were able to meet him. He has indicated that he is very interested in learning more about Rotary and perhaps being a member one day. Sounds like a good start. He is suppose to be with us again tomorrow as Bruce's guest, however, Bruce forgot that he won't be there, so he will be a guest of all of us!!!! I hope we will have other guests also. Lois, thank you for the yummy dessert and the recipe. BTW, Sandra has posted a few "Rotary" recipes, on the web, so if you haven't looked at it lately, please do so.

Nancy Johnson will be Sol's guest and our program tomorrow and Judy C has dessert. Check the website also for our program that we will be having on the 23rd. Nice introduction.

I picked up the "book buckets" from head start and  placed  one at the library, the other one is at the YMCA. Those little kids at Head Start were so excited when I told them we were going to fill them to the top. (Of course, they thought I would be back the next day!!) It's so fun and exciting to do for others!!!! Roger, could we get a blurb in the Chieftain regarding Books for Kids? Thanks, I knew you would say "yes."

See you tomorrow at Twisters. Let's try to arrive as close to 11:45 so the server can have a good head count and our food on the table by 12:00. We need to be for sure eating by 12 so we can get the business mtg finished and plenty of time for our programs. Thanks for your cooperation.

Judy

10-31-09 Words from the Prez

I think the trick-or-treaters have gone home now so I can finally just sit and Miksi can quit standing guard at the door. She's so afraid she'll miss an opportunity to bark!!! It's still fun seeing all of those cute little ones in their costumes.

Speaking of costumes---we had a great Halloween party Monday night at Jim & Golden Coleman's barn. It's a nice place to be and they are very gracious host/hostess. A HUGE THANKS to the Adm committee. Sandra, I'm including you too!!! I know it was alot of planning and organizing, but it came off without a hitch and everyone appreciated your efforts. The food was scrumptious--grilled pork chops (thanks Bruce & Dean) sweet potatoes(thanks Thomas' & Bush farms) cole slaw,(Sandra), brownies, apple crisp & a pumpkin dessert (Marva) cornbread (Sue Bishop) Panera bread (Charles) The beer was mighty tasty too.

Several chose to wear costumes which is always fun. Be sure to check out the pictures Lois sent. Sheila, I thought you were suppose to return those band uniforms??? You did a fine job playing the Wabash Cannon Ball on your trombone!!! That was what you played, right? Al & Kathy--what cute little fairies you are!! Dean & Dorothy thought they were in New Orleans, Jim--you should have marched behind Sheila while she was playing your fight song--had to stay away from Roger and his muzzle (is that what that thing was) Bruce, you look fantastic with your mohawk---I know your mom & dad are proud. Mike & Shirley came straight to the party from their dude ranch. Not only did the group not know what my costume was,  but evidently you didn't know a sharpie pen is to have the lid on when not in use-----needless to say my sweat shirt has alot of orange on it and also my car seat. I must talk to the treasurer about getting funds to fly to Alaska and replacing my shirt.  Those who couldn't make it we missed you and you all missed a great time.

Just a reminder---Monday Judy C is the program chair and Lois has dessert. Nov 9th Sol is the program chair and his guest will be Nancy Jones Director of the "Seniors" and Tourism. Will be a good program and a great time to invite a guest.

See you all Monday at Twisters

Judy

FYI--While attending the Coleman's (not Bruce or Del) 70th wedding anniversary celebration today, a few people mentioned the articles that have been in the Chieftain regarding Rotary & how nice it is to read about what all we are involved in and also thanked us for all of the work we did at the Sweet's home. We are becoming more visible and that's a good thing. Let's keep it rolling!!!!!

Greetings to all on this wet/cool Sunday evening. Was a good night to just be cozy at home.
We had good attendance at our meeting on Monday. Jack/John(you know how I get confused with names) Helin was a guest of Al's & also gave the program telling of the progression of the streets that are being worked on, future plans for the city, casino happenings (short video on that) and then answered questions from members. Others guests were Scott Beery, cousin of Roger's & Robin Neal. The delicious dessert  was compliments of Roger & a big thanks to Sheila for preparing it for us.

Be sure to keep checking the website---Bonner Springs Rotary.org. Each committee & it's members are now on there. So, if you don't know which one you are on----check and see. I still need to hear from Public Relations & Membership on when you will be meeting with your group & then an update given to the club. Each of us needs to be thinking of guests to invite!!!!

REMEMBER,NO NOON MEETING TOMORROW Oct 26th, but we will gather at 6:00 p.m. for our Halloween party at  Jim & Golden Coleman's barn. I hope they will be able to join us for a fun evening and good food organized and prepared by the Adm. committee. Costumes are optional(clothing is not!!) It's always a great evening and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone.

Next week, Nov 2nd, we will be back at Twister's for our regular meeting. Judy C has the program and Lois Kastner has dessert.

Hope your week has been a good one and I'll see you tomorrow.

Judy

Another good coverage regarding Rotary was in the Chieftain this week. If you haven't seen it, try to get a copy of the paper or go online to read it.

Greetings to all on this brisk Friday morning-
Miksi & I made our steps a little quicker this am due to the cool air. However, I just kept thinking, it's only going to get worse & I'll still have to  be out there bright and early to please the princess.
We had an great mtg & excellent program on Monday. Sorry to those of you who had to miss. Our guests were Sue Bishop (wife of Jim) & Bill Hick aka Wilbur Wright. He was also our program and it was great---all about the origination and development of the first flight he & Orville attempted. I understand you never are for sure WHO he will be when you see him!!! Thanks Jim for bringing him to our club. Dean brought apple crisp and we gave a big thanks to Dorothy!!! Charles, thank you for the email telling us what you and your comm members are working on. I know you have alot of planning going on and I really appreciate you guys meeting. We still need to have a report sometime from the Public Relations, Membership and Foundation.
REMINDER---- Saturday, October 17th, 2009 is our Christmas in October project. We will meet at 317 Sheidley, 8:30 a.m. Judy  C thinks if we have lots of helping hands we should be able to finish by noon. "Come on over & let's get-er-done."
Waneta, sorry to hear about your car accident--the good news---YOU ARE OK!!!!
Monday Al Ramirez has the program and Roger/Sheila has dessert. (ooo, I can hardly wait!!) Please be giving much thought on a person(s) that you can invite to Rotary as a guest. Those of you who have a program coming up, it would be very helpful to know in advance what it will be so a person bringing a guest can let them know.
Thanks to all of you for your support and helping to keep Rotary the premier club of Bonner Springs. Hope to see you tomorrow, Sat.
Judy

10-11-09 Ok, so I didn't do any better this week than last. No more promises!!!!! Do hope it was a good week for you and you'll be ready for Rotary tomorrow. Bruce gave us an update on what the Service Project committee has and is doing. It has been a busy time and they have done a great job of meeting and being organized. Thanks to all of you on that comm. We had good cookies for dessert, thanks to Sol. Next Sat., Oct 17th, is Christmas in October. We will meet at 8:30 a.m. location--- 317 Sheidley. (Right, Judy?) I hope as many of us as possible can be there for all or at least part of this project. The more the merrier and the quicker we can finish whatever is in store for us. I do hope for a little warmer weather, but guess we won't know that until Sat. Nicole Kelly, from the Chieftain will be there sometime for a cover story. Yeah!!!!! Jim Bishop is covering for Lois as program chair for this week. Dean has dessert. Trust you all got your invitation from the Adm chair/comm. We will send around a sign up sheet tomorrow. Thanks Charles for the cute invite. An update on my health issues----I had a good report from the oncologist last Wed---blood work good (good meaning same as last time, so that is GOOD) lymph glands & spleen fine, so I had a hugh feeling of relief. Go back next time in three months. My prayer each day remains the same that it will stay this way (or I would take better or no signs of CLL also, but can't be too greedy!!) Thanks, my friends for your prayers and support on this new journey I'm traveling. You are greatly appreciated. Hope to see you all tomorrow at Twisters. Judy

10-04-09

Greetings to all

Another week passed and I didn't get this note out---next week it will be done much sooner!! Oh dear, now I have put the pressure on myself. Trust you have all had a good week. I really like these nice, cool crisp days when I can bring out the long sleeve shirts, sweaters and my socks!!! Miksi likes them too so she isn't so hot after our morning walk!!! ( Al,doesn't that news make you happy about Miksi, or as you call her, "my hounddog.")

Had a good meeting last week and enjoyed a program given by John Hilton, AD at the BSHS. Thanks, Wes for bringing him to our club. Other guests were Art Collins and Robin Neal. Art says his club doesn't sing #3 nearly as well as we do. I'm not certain he even recognized it. Our golfers got wet, but none of them melted and they seemed to have a good time with the other club. It's nice that we can interact with others Rotary clubs.

I attended the Parade of Heroes---didn't volunteer my time, but chose a spot so I could watch the festivities from my car. IT WAS COLD!!!! Was a nice event.

Charles Thomas is the program chair this week, but couldn't get him by phone to see what it is, so we'll just have to wait until Monday. Sol, you have dessert. The service club will be the comm making a report this week. Hope the other comm chairs have scheduled a meeting with their members. Please let me know. Kudos to Nicole Kelley for getting an the article in the Chieftain regarding Rotary. If you haven't seen it, try to get hold of a copy. It's a very nice article.

Please make note---Al has a new email address. It is, ramirez.alfred@att.net. Be sure to change this in your address book.

Joel, will you PLEASE bring the roster with you tomorrow? If for some reason you aren't going to be with us, could you get a copy to me.

Next week I will let you know when I have submitted the letter to the website and then you will be able to read it there. I want us to all get use to using our new site. Thanks again to Charles & Sandra ) for purchasing the site and all of the hard work (especially Sandra )that has & continues to go into keeping it updated. We all appreciate it very much.

Have a good evening and I'll see you tomorrow.

Judy

Sunday, September 20, 2009

Greetings to all and hope that each of you have enjoyed this beautiful week-end. Let's hope it continues for quite awhile longer.

Trust you all enjoyed your meal from Madame Hatters and touring the new library facilities last week. We had great attendance along with several guests. I think we should consider asking Kim Beets and Nicole Gerken to join us again as guests and perhaps potential members one day. Mike Gerber did not get back with me last week, but I will try again and hope that some of you will do the same.  Our other guests were Bill Miller and Craig Gaffney from Village West, Charly Vogt from Shawnee and Bruce ? from KCK Rotary. Good to have all of them. Thanks to Bill Miller for my new Parade of Heroes shirt. I'll be sure to wear it when I attend the parade Sept 30th at the Legends.

Bruce, thanks for conducting the meeting last week. Judy C gave us some info on Christmas in October and will have more details later. Roger, what a wonderful surprise when you presented me with my beautiful YELLOW ROTARY SHIRT!!!! I will wear it with great pride. Thank you sooooooooo much.

Tomorrow our guest/program will be Nicole Kelly from the Chieftain.(Del's guest, however, he won't be there!!!) The exciting part of this--she wants to do an article about Rotary for the Chieftain!!!!!! Isn't this great news!!! Hope we will have good attendance for this meeting also. Good luck to our golf foursome tomorrow, Dean, Del, Roger & Wes. They can tell you more about this next week---it really is for a good Rotary cause, they're not just ducking out of our Rotary (this time) (Dean, you know they are calling for chances of rain!!!)

Marva, you have dessert tomorrow, but I forgot to tell you last week and am slow getting this out. So, if you didn't remember--don't worry about it, I need to be a little quicker with the reminders.

Hope to see all (minus four) tomorrow.

Judy
